Parish Care Team

ParishCare1.JPG (113694 bytes)

The Parish Care Team of Immanuel Lutheran Church was established by Pastor Marla, Ken and Darlene Anderson in 2014. It's goal is to bring the Christian presence of Immanuel to the community and to bring comfort to those who are in need of support, either short term or long term. In this way, those who are home-bound, have limited mobility, are experiencing illness or recovering from injury, those living in assisted living sites or those who have experienced a loss can be connected with the church through frequent visits, calls and cards. Care team visitors assist Pastor Marla as assigned.

Nine members of the congregation volunteered to make the two year commitment to participate in training classes for the position of parish care provider. After receiving a modified Stevens ministry training provided by Jerry Dufeck, Associate in Ministry, and visitation skills training by Pastor Ron Gerl, Parmly chaplain, the new parish care providers were commissioned at the church service on April 6, 2014, to begin serving the congregation. At any time, the person receiving care can ask to end the relationship or can request a visit from Pastor Marla. Currently, Darlene Anderson and Judy Nelson are co-leaders of the team, which meets once a month at church.

Some of the initial partnerships have been completed and others are on-going. New recipients are added either by request from a member of the congregation or by accepting an offer when it is presented by Pastor Marla. A helpful series of grief booklets is available for those members who experience loss. The team also hosts afternoon communion worship services several times a year with special emphasis on providing transportation to the church for those who need it.

To assist members in taking control of medical decision making for themselves or loved ones, the Parish Care Team sponsored a lecture on Advanced Care Directives and the POLST (Provider Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment) by Amy Shaleen, Fairview Lakes social worker, on November 2, 2015.

If you or a family member would like to receive support from a Parish Care Team member, please contact Pastor Marla (651-315-3354) or the church office (651-583-2340).
